December 15: Donkey, Luke 2.16

In Biblical times, people’s homes included a front room that sheltered the animals at night. Mary and Joseph were given shelter in a such a room and would have been surrounded by animals, yet this is where Jesus, who is called King, Savior, Christ, Messiah, was born.

Who has seen you in low estate and yet still regards you in awe?”

“Why lies he in such mean estate, Where ox and donkeys are feeding?” The lyrics to What Child Is This? were written by William Chatterton Dix, in 1865.

“Gentle Mary laid her child lowly in a manger; There He lay, the undefiled, To the world a stranger: Such a Babe in such a place, Can He be the Savior?” Gentle Mary Laid Her Child was written by Joseph Simpson Cook in 1919.
